The popularity of this book should come as no surprise. A book written over a hundred years ago with the title Mystic Christianity is being revived. Interest in Christian Mysticism is on the rise along with interests in yogic meditation, Hatha Yoga, and various healing modalities. At C.E.R.N. world scientists look to rediscover subtle energies with names like Prana, Chi, the Life Force, and in the United States, Subtle Energy. This not yet discovered energy is the fuel that Christian Mystics use to power their life intentions of Peace, joy, love, and goodness. I believe that one of the reasons the Christian Mystic perspective is just now coming into the light of day, 2,000 years after its teaching by Jesus, has a lot to do with two first century philosophers named Valentinus and Irenaeus. Shortly after the death of Jesus, Valentinus argued for a Gnostic faith – a faith that was based on the eternal spirit of Man. And, he believed that this spirit could be experienced through prayer and Devotion in the same way that Man’s spirit is experienced through the practice of Meditation and Yoga. Valentinus had many followers. Together they wrote many gospels describing the teachings of Jesus in these Gnostic terms. They believed Jesus to be a Gnostic teacher. On the other hand, Irenaeus believed Valentinus to be a madman, a lunatic that had no observable evidence for any of his ideas. Irenaeus and his followers wrote volumes and volumes of manuscripts denouncing Valentinus as a heretic and blasphemer. They believed in an orthodox faith. A faith in which the Church acted as an intermediary between Man and Divinity. At one point during this time Valentinus feared for his life. Eventually, Irenaeus won the battle of ideas concerning which direction the Christian faith would go. Over the next 100 years, all the followers of Valentinus were killed and all their books were destroyed. 200 years later the Bible was created at the First Council of Nicaea in 325 AD. Unfortunately, by this time, all of Valentinus’s work had been destroyed. He and his followers’ perspective was never included into the New Testament. In our time, December 1945, an Arab peasant made an astonishing archeological discovery in Upper Egypt. His name was Muhammad Ali. He discovered in an earthen ware jar, buried deep in the Egyptian sands, thirteen papyrus books, bound in leather. He had found 52 texts written by Valentinus and his followers. Included in the texts were the Gospel of Thomas, the Gospel of Philip, the Gospel of Mary Magdalene, the Dialog of the Savior and others. It took 25 years of court battles just to determine who would translate the texts. Presumably, the Roman Catholic Church wanted them back to finish what they started and destroy them or at least not publish them. Luckily, Harvard Divinity school won the court battles and Elaine Pagels did the translation and the texts became known as the Gnostic Gospels. These Gospels vindicated Valentinus and threw a bright light on Christian Mysticism and Yogi Ramacharaka. The Yogi discusses, from a mystic’s and Valentinus’s point of view, the Virgin Birth, Reincarnation, how Jesus “Took on the Sins of the World”, the Miracles of Jesus, as well as many other mystical arts. Once seen as occultish and heretical, Christian Mysticism is becoming part of Christian mainstream thinking, offering Solace to a multitude of seekers.
